☀️ Gaming powered by Disney magic
new contender in the e-commerce marketplace, career investment thesis, and more
Welcome Players!
Took a minute but here we are with the 3rd edition! Expect to return to the regular cadence with some updates in the near future I have been working on to take this up a notch 👀
Let’s jump right in 👇

Disney magic fuels Fortnite to new heights
Buff / eCommerce / Social Gaming
While other streaming platforms are primarily shoring up their user base with original or exclusive content Disney is moving into gaming by partnering with one of the largest gaming phenomena in the last decade- Fortnite.
After 6 years since launch Fortnite recently added 3 new game modes to join the iconic Battle Royale: Lego Fortnite, Fortnite Festival and Rocket Racing.
These new game modes open new monetization opportunities via cosmetics e.g. skins for cars and band emotes to play your favorite songs in-game (yea, you can play as Goku and sing Bad Romance by Lady Gaga after catching a dub).
But these new games are not only for opening new revenue streams- it shows that Fortnite, and Epic Games, are committed to becoming the premier social gaming platform where you can sing and dance to your favorite songs, harvest and build towns, race others, and more anticipated game modes that touch on a multitude of gaming niches and yet remain free-to-play, so you can play with friends and family anytime.
Fortnite’s appeal should not be understated with 230 million active users of which 15 million log on daily to play as their favorite characters- and now Disney will bring their own iconic brand and characters to the game at a reported investment cost of $1.5 billion.
Fair price to see the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in Fortnite.
Despite the reported cost Disney has much to gain:
reach into a robust and active user base,
revenue share from cosmetics and events,
and access to infrastructure and technology developed by Epic Games (think Unreal Engine 5).
Where do I see this going? Well, Disney may not be the only brand interested in setting up experiences and shops in Fortnite.
I would not be surprised if fashion brands, cooking, and Sims-like experiences make their way as well to fully realize the idea of the “metaverse”.
PayPal emerges from the shadow with a suite of updates
Buff / eCommerce
PayPal services nearly 400 million consumers and 35 million merchants totalling ¼ of the world’s e-commerce annual transactions. Despite such a large market share they accelerate forward with not just 1 or 3 new products, but 6 new product releases.
Their new product releases target their primary consumer and merchant user groups and across the entire typical consumer user journey:
discovery (browsing)
selection (add to cart)
checkout (purchase)
tracking (post-purchase support)
recommendations (loop back to discovery)
Their new product releases when aligned with the typical consumer user journey highlights the areas they intend to foster more growth in:
Product | Most impact in the user journey for consumers | What they intend to accomplish or improve |
---|---|---|
Passkeys | Checkout | Use biometrics for secure checkout, twice as fast |
Fastlane | Checkout | One-tap checkout: remove friction |
Smart Receipts | Tracking, Recommendations | View merchant offers, receive cashback rewards |
Advanced Offers Platform | Recommendations | For merchants; enhanced recommendations for customers |
CashPass | Recommendations, Discovery | Incentives consumers to loop back to discovery: browse and checkout with paypal to earn money back |
Enhanced Business Profiles | Discovery | Hyper growth for local small businesses via marketing |
Based on the table above it is evident PayPal’s goal is to create the most robust one-stop ecommerce stop for merchants to setup shop and consumers to provide their patronage through with no hassle.
